Trans fats should not be on the menu and the government is heading in the right direction with the establishment of a new national body with the job of reducing trans fats in Australian diets.Trans fat, is an artery-cloggng fat that is formed when vegetable oils are hardened into margarine or shortening. It is found in many other foods besides margarine and shortening, however, including fried foods like french fries and fried chicken, doughnuts, cookies, pastries and crackers.
This industrialised modern fat works at the cellular level interfering with chemical reactions leading to heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
Trans fats however should not be confused with saturated fats which contribute a concentrated source of energy in the diet and provide the building blocks for cell membranes and a variety of hormones and hormone like substances.
